Type of employment relationship and mortality: prospective study among Finnish employees in 1984-2000

2009

Background: The study investigated the relationship between the type of employment (permanent/temporary) contract and mortality. Factors through which temporary employment was expected to be associated with increased mortality were the degree of satisfaction with the uncertainty related to temporary work situation (Study 1) and the voluntary/involuntary basis for temporary work (Study 2). Methods: In Study 1 the data consisted of representative survey on Finnish employees in 1984 ( n = 4502), which was merged with register-based follow-up data in Statistics Finland covering years 1985–2000. In Study 2 the data consisted of representative survey on Finnish employees in 1990 ( n = 3502) with …

Domestic Violence Interventions in Social and Health Care Settings: Challenges of Temporary Projects and Short-Term Solutions.

2020

Social welfare service and health care providers are in a key position to implement successful domestic violence (DV) interventions. However, it is known that DV intervention and prevention work is often lacking in coordination and continuity. In addition, the limited resources, hectic work pace, and changing practices negatively affect the development of successful ways to prevent and intervene in DV. This qualitative study involving 11 focus groups, composed of social welfare and health care professionals ( n = 51) in a midsized Finnish hospital, examined the challenges and possibilities within DV interventions and the adoption of good practices produced by a DV intervention development …

Job Insecurity and Health-Related Outcomes among Different Types of Temporary Workers

2005

Over the past few decades, the number of flexible workers has increased, a situation that has captured researchers’ attention. Traditionally, temporary workers were portrayed as being disadvantaged compared to permanent workers. But in the new era, temporary workers cannot be treated as a homogeneous group. This study distinguishes between four types of temporaries based on their contract preference and employability level. Furthermore, it compares them with a permanent group. Whether these groups differ on job insecurity and health-related outcomes in a sample of 383 Spanish employees was tested. Differences in well-being and life satisfaction were found, and the hypotheses were supported.…

A person-environment-fit-model for temporary organizations - Antecedents for temporary working settings

2021

Abstract Projectification has led to the widespread use of temporary organizations (TOs) in many industries, but the various factors that determine successful work by employees in TOs are unexplored. We argue that organizations have different degrees of temporariness depending on the following five TO dimensions: temporal duration, nature of the task, team composition, hierarchy, and coordination. Considering the TO dimensions and varying degrees of temporariness, we propose a person-environment (P-E) fit model. The model comprises three levels – organizational-, group-, and job-oriented – and relates personal attributes to the TO dimensions. We contribute to theory by developing a set of p…

Temporary workers: the role of Corporate Image on Work Engagement

2012

Introduction: A great deal of attention has been given recently on relations between the employees and organization: if this relation is not healthy, it decreases the likelihood of turnover (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, 2009); employers are unlikely to invest in organizational commitment and motivation to work for temporary workers (Allen, Meyer, 1990; Becker, 1993; Amuedo-Dorantes, 2000; De Cuyper et al., 2008). In order to be successful, organizations should strategically aim to fit the individual values with corporate values (Bellotto, 1997). Value conflicts decrease employees' involvement in their work. Employees experience a de-motivating situation in which they are d…

Job insecurity among temporary workers: Looking through the gender lens

2014

Based on the gender model and the life context model, the financial and domestic responsibilities and expectations associated with getting a new assignment are tested as potential gender specific moderators of the link between job insecurity and commitment, performance, and depressive moods. In a cross-sectional international questionnaire study of 1981 temporary workers’ three-way interactions between job insecurity, gender, and the moderators were tested. Expectations play a moderating role for women only, intensifying the negative relationship between job insecurity and commitment. Financial responsibility strengthened the negative relationship of job insecurity with commitment, as well…

Self-esteem and Occupational Self-efficacy as Mediators of the Associations between Perceived Organizational Support, Work Engagement and Job Satisfa…

2012

Introduction: Previous research has documented greater vulnerability and exposure to stress among temporary workers due to labor uncertainty, especially in cases where temporary workers are considered peripheral workers in whom employers are unlikely to invest foster long-term organizational commitment and motivation to work (Becker, 1993; Amuedo-Dorantes 2000; De Cuyper & De Nitte, 2005; De Cuyper at al., 2008). Many characteristics of temporary employment adds to the vulnerability of temporary workers: poor job characteristics, highly monotonous work (Hall 2006), lower influence on workplace decisions (Aronsson et al. 2002; Parker et al. 2002), lower job satisfaction and lower organizatio…

The prospective effects of work–family conflict and enrichment on job exhaustion and turnover intentions: comparing long-term temporary vs. permanent…

2015

This study investigated work–family conflict (WFC) and enrichment (WFE) in relation to job exhaustion and turnover intentions among long-term temporary (n = 384) and permanent (n = 430) workers. We used three-wave data collected among Finnish university employees in 3 consecutive years. The participants were either permanently or temporarily employed for the whole 3-year period. The results showed that permanent employees reported both higher WFC and WFE during the follow-ups than temporary employees. Temporary workers reported higher job exhaustion and turnover intentions compared to permanent workers. Job contract functioned as a moderator: high WFC showed a prospective effect on increase…
